Diesel engines are one of the most important prime movers for mobility and reorganized power generation and are categorized by heterogeneous combustion. Heterogeneous combustion leads to formation of soot and NOx in the combustion chamber. The gasoline injection system, which is the heart of an engine, plays a pivotal role in the fuel–air mixing processes inside the combustion chamber. Fuel atomization activities are mainly contingent on constraints such as nozzle diameter, injection...

A high pressure liquid cell interferometer to measure the variation of refractive index of liquids with pressure to 14 kbars is described. The amount of liquid needed is only 3 c.c. Interferometric measurements on a number of liquids, at high pressure show (i) first experimental proof that the Eulerian frame-indifferent analogue strain E is a more useful strain measure than the Lagrangian strain, (ii) Keane's equation of state best describes each and all liquids, studied, (iii) change in...

Recent investigations have shown that unoriented phase I poly(vinylidene fluoride (PVF2) films can be produced by pressure quenching. The poling field dependence of the pyroelectric coefficient, P sub y, the piezoelectric coefficients d sub p, d sub 31 and e sub 31 and the dielectric response is investigated for poling fields up to E sub p = 2.75 million V/cm. These quantities exhibit a plateau region where the initial rapid increase with increasing E sub p decreases. This behavior is similar...

Recently there was a flurry of activities in studying the effects of phase transitions in the Earth's mantle. From petrological and geophysical considerations, phase-transitions would also play an important role in venusian dynamics. The basic differences between the two planets are the surface boundary conditions, both thermally and mechanically. In this vein we have studied time-dependent mantle convection with multiple phase transitions and depth-dependent thermal expansivity (alpha is...

The objectives of this investigation were (1) to develop elastomeric seals for 5200 psi air systems wherein the compressors are lubricated with either petroleum-base fluids or with phosphate-ester fluids, and (2) to prepare a specification for these seals. A Viton B stock (377-112) was previously developed and shown by performance tests to be very suitable for this purpose. However, O-rings of this stock corroded steel and bronze under humid conditions. This problem was solved by washing the...

Advances in material development and processing have led to the introduction of ceramic hybrid bearings for many applications. The introduction of silicon nitride hybrid bearings into the high pressure oxidizer turbopump, on the space shuttle main engine, led NASA to solve a highly persistent and troublesome bearing problem. Hybrid bearings consist of ceramic balls and steel races. The majority of hybrid bearings utilize Si3N4 balls. The aerospace industry is currently studying the use of...

The technology issues involved in power subsystem automation and the reasonable objectives to be sought in such a program were discussed. The complexities, uncertainties, and alternatives of power subsystem automation, along with the advantages from both an economic and a technological perspective were considered. Whereas most spacecraft power subsystems now use certain automated functions, the idea of complete autonomy for long periods of time is almost inconceivable. Thus, it seems prudent...

Advantages of and design requirements for a load-bearing metal shell with an overwrapped glass-filament shell for high-pressure-fluid storage at 75 to -423 deg F were investigated analytically and experimentally. Proper design permits utilization of the maximum load-bearing capabilities of both shells and makes possible tanks of significantly lighter weight than the best cylindrical and spherical homogeneous metal pressure vessels. Glass-fiber-reinforced metal tanks were fabricated and tested;...

We present the results of two independent analyses of ozonesonde measurements of the vertical profile of ozone. For most of the ozonesonde stations we use data that were recently reprocessed and reevaluated to improve their quality and internal consistency. The two analyses give similar results for trends in ozone. We attribute differences in results primarily to differences in data selection criteria and in utilization of data correction factors, rather than in statistical trend models. We...

A perturbation technique which is particularly well suited for high pressures is used to calculate thermodynamic properties for a simple liquid whose molecules interact via a Buckingham (exp-6) potential. There is good agreement between computations and experiments for moderate temperature isotherms for liquid nitrogen. A calculation of the shock Hugoniot of liquid nitrogen exhibits excellent agreement with experimental data. (Author)

Orthochloronitrobenzene (OCNB) is a trace contaminant in Otto Fuel II (OFII), a nitrated ester used as a torpedo propellant by the U.S. Navy. In a published study, OCNB has been reported to produce multiple life tumors in male and female rats. The quantification of OCNB in OFII was performed by high pressure liquid chromatography. The OFII was found to contain 0.00165% OCNB and a distillate of OFII was found to contain 0.009% OCNB. It was estimated that over a 12 month inhalation exposure to...

The current pressure sensitive paint (PSP) technique assumes a linear relationship (Stern-Volmer Equation) between intensity ratio (I(sub o)/I) and pressure ratio (P/P(sub o)) over a wide range of pressures (vacuum to ambient or higher). Although this may be valid for some PSPs, in most PSPs the relationship is nonlinear, particularly at low pressures (less than 0.2 psia when the oxygen level is low). This non-linearity can be attributed to variations in the oxygen quenching (de-activation)...
